Causal Relations via Econometrics
نویسنده
چکیده
Applied econometric work takes a superficial approach to causality. Understanding economic affairs, making good policy decisions, and progress in the economic discipline depend on our ability to infer causal relations from data. We review the dominant approaches to causality in econometrics, and suggest why they fail to give good results. We feel the problem cannot be solved by traditional tools, and requires some out-of-the-box thinking. Potentially promising approaches to solutions are discussed.

Identification and Causal Order
This paper looks at one important part of econometric methodology: identification. Put generally, relations that hold among observable and unobservable entities are identifiable if given some a priori knowledge about the relations, previously unknown characteristics of those relations can be deduced from observations. Typically in the econometrics literature, the identification problem is prese...
متن کاملAutoregressive causal relation: Digital filtering approach to causality measures in frequency domain
A novel measure of the Autoregressive Causal Relation based on a multivariate autoregressive model is proposed. It reveals the strength of the connections among a simultaneous time series and also the direction of the information flow. It is defined in the frequency domain, similar to the formerly published methods such as: Directed Transfer Function, Direct Directed Transfer Function, Partial ...
متن کاملCausality and Cointegration between Consumption and Gdp in 25 Oecd Countries: Limitations of the Cointegration Approach
A critical review of cointegration is presented in this paper, emphasizing some limitations of this approach to testing causal relations in Econometrics. We present an application of cointegration tests to the relation between Private Consumption and Gross Domestic Product in 25 OECD countries, during the period 1960-97, and the results confirm those limitations and the convenience of giving mo...
متن کاملCausality, Confounding, and Control
In a previous paper, Russo et al. (2006), causality is considered in the framework of structural models, i.e. statistical models characterized by parameters that are stable over a large class of interventions or of environmental changes and that take into account background and contextual knowledge. From this statistical viewpoint, causality is defined in terms of exogeneity in a structural mod...
متن کاملTeaching Causal Inference in Undergraduate Econometrics
This paper argues that the current way in which the undergraduate introductory econometrics course is taught is neither inline with current empirical practice nor very intuitive. It proposes a shift in focus of the course on causal inference using the Roy-Rubin Causal Model (RRCM). A second theme of the paper is the suggestion to use random regressors from the start to improve the ability of st...
